“We got a substantial upfront cash payment of €1.7 billion from Apple, strengthening further our cash position. As said earlier, our plans is to provide more details on the intended use of cash in conjunction with our Q3 earnings,”

-Official Investors Call transcript from Nokia

The spat has fired up last year when Nokia claimed on Apple infringing on several of patents it holds. In the past year, Apple made a licensing deal with Nokia since 2011, after both settled last latent disputes. However, Apple wasn’t up for a new deal with Nokia and then accused them of looking for unfair provisions.

The recent fight seemed to be intense as Apple has updated its store excluding Withings’ products which are a division of Nokia. But, after their settlement, Apple again has added Withings’ products in the store. Both Nokia and Apple have just not only settled the patent issue, but they also collaborated on technologies like digital health, optical network, and IP routing.

Considering Nokia is actively developing new Android Phones, and has made a comeback on the market, Now the interesting thing is to know what Nokia is up to after getting $2 billion it has in the bank. We are eagerly waiting for Nokia to announce quarterly earnings release which will reveal how much Apple is paying for this agreement.

WhatsApp Policies Are Not As Secure As You Think: Report

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps on both major mobile platforms, iOS, and Android. Facebook, who now owns the said messaging client, has worked a lot in recent years to increase the privacy and security of the app and we have also covered some tips to make WhatsApp more secure for you.

But it looks like WhatsApp’s policies are not as safe as they can be, which was revealed by Electronic Frontier Foundation. The EFF said in a report titled “Who has your back” that WhatsApp policies are too weak to protect users from governments.

“WhatsApp does not explicitly state that it prohibits third-party access to its user data, nor does it say that third parties are prohibited from allowing WhatsApp user data to be used for surveillance purposes,”  and “Our reading of WhatsApp’s public-facing policies would not prohibit it from sharing data to be used for surveillance,” the EFF report wrote about the messaging service.

whatsapp

Alongside with WhatsApp, the company prepared reports about many other companies, among them, Adobe, Dropbox, Uber, WordPress, Pinterest and some others did earn good marks and praise for their user privacy centric policy. Two biggest disappointments were Amazon and WhatsApp. both scored poor marks and were deemed not consumer privacy centric.

“This information is a magnet for governments seeking to surveil citizens, journalists, and activists. When governments do so, they need to follow the law, and users are increasingly demanding that companies holding their data enact the toughest policies to protect customer information,” said EFF Activism Director Rainey Reitman.

Real World Test Shows That OnePlus 5 is Faster Than iPhone 7 Plus

OnePlus 5 has already beaten many some of the most popular flagship Android Phones in speed tests and now tests show that the phone is faster than Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus, the most powerful phone made by the Cupertino company.

In a video speed test by YouTube channel PhoneBuff, David Brahimi set OnePlus 5 against iPhone 7 Plus in a speed test of two laps of launching certain apps and games. Previous tests had ruled iPhone the winner consistently since iPhone 6s. But this term, OnePlus 5 launched the apps faster than iOS.

Although there are some things to consider, as speed tests are not definitive the indicators of a phone’s performance. They just take the launching apps to judge. The speed of copying files, performing other tasks in the OS is not taken into consideration. OnePlus 5 also had some help as it has its shorter app launch animations. While iOS 10 has extensive animations slowing it down, OnePlus’ animations are shorter. However, considering the phone does come with an impressive 8GB of RAM and Snapdragon 835 SoC, OnePlus 5 is hard to face hiccups in performance.

The OnePlus 5 was announced globally last week. The phone was launched in India last Thursday at Rs. 32,999 for the base variant with 6GB RAM, and Rs. 37,999 for 8GB RAM. The phone has a 5.5-inch full-HD screen, Android 7.1.1 Nougat with OxygenOS skin, and comes with 64GB or 128GB storage. Camera on the back consists 16-megapixel and telephoto 20-megapixel sensors. The front camera has 16-megapixel resolution. It packs a 3300mAh battery with Dash Charge support for quick-charging.

GST Effect: Apple Just Cut The Prices of iPhones And MacBooks in Country

As soon as GST is taken into the application, Apple iPhone’s MRPs have fallen, along with iPad, Apple Watch, and MacBooks throughout the market, though with few exceptions. The price drop varied from 1200 Rs. to 6,600 Rs. respectively for 32GB iPhone SE and 256GB iPhone 7 Plus.

For iPad models drop is from Rs. 900 to Rs. 3,900, as newly announced iPad Pro models have gone cheaper too. That too is before anyone could buy them.

MacBook Air prices have not differed, but MacBook and MacBook Pro models have new fallen prices benefitting Rs. 5,100 and Rs. 11,800. Mac Pro too has got quite a reduction after the last big revamp. And the newly refreshed Mac models also have price cuts even before market availability, while top-end 27-inch iMac models and Mac Mini are at the receiving end of a slight price bump.

All of this had a sudden and customer benefitting changes brought by GST. Arguably the same had been opening as many markets such as private transport and goods retail. It is deemed very near that not just Apple, but the whole smartphone market is going to react to GST as soon as it graduates on its path.

Windows 10’s Insider Build 16215 is Out, Here is Everything You Need To Know

After the last build update a couple weeks ago, Microsoft announced the rollout of a new build of Windows for its insider program. The build number 16215 is currently released to Insiders in the fast ring and older builds, this one is more focused on adding Microsoft’s new Fluent Design and Microsoft Edge improvements.

Aside from that Microsoft has made some improvements to Cortana, PDF reader and Handwriting experience too. The company posted a detailed Changelog on its blog, following are some of the most notable new features:

Start & Action Center bring elements of Fluent Design

This build introduces new UI for Start and Action Center that includes elements of our new Fluent Design System which was announced at Build 2017.

Start improvements include:

  • Acrylic: If you have transparency enabled for Start, you’ll notice it’s now been updated to use the new acrylic design.
  • Vertical resize: No more glitches at the bottom of the frame.
  • Horizontal resize: The frame now starts resizing horizontally immediately (like vertical resize), as opposed to only “snapping” to certain widths.
  • Diagonal resize: The frame can be resized diagonally!
  • Resize grips: It’s now easier to “grip” the edge of the frame to start resizing.
  • Tablet mode transition: Smoother transition into tablet mode.

A new look for Action Center: Action Center has been redesigned based on your feedback to provide much clearer information separation and hierarchy. And the new design for Action Center also includes elements of our Fluent Design System such as acrylic! (and in case you were wondering, we’ve also added acrylic to our notification toasts!). As a reminder, you can customize the visible quick actions by going to Settings > System > Notifications & actions.

Microsoft Edge Improvements

Pin your favorite websites to your taskbar: Pinned sites are back! We heard your feedback, and are in this build you can now pin a website to the taskbar from Microsoft Edge! We’ll use the site’s icon to give you quick access to your favorite sites right from the taskbar. Simply select “Pin this page to the taskbar” from the settings menu in Microsoft Edge.

Pin websites to your taskbar with Microsoft Edge!

Full screen mode (F11) in Microsoft Edge: This build introduces a new Full Screen experience in Microsoft Edge. Simply press F11 or choose the new Full Screen icon in the Settings menu to take your websites full-screen. You can exit Full-Screen view by pressing F11 again, or by clicking the Restore icon in the top-right corner.

Cortana Improvements

Taking Cortana reminders to the next level through vision intelligence: Most of us have experienced taking a picture of upcoming event poster or bookmarking an event site for future reference, only to forget about it later. With this build, we’re rolling out two new features starting with the en-us market to help you never again miss an event you’re interested in!

Cortana camera roll insights: With your permission, Cortana will now prompt you to create a reminder when she notices event posters in your camera roll! To try it out, make sure you’re signed into Cortana with your MSA or work account, and then give Cortana permission to access your camera roll via Settings > Cortana > Permissions & history > “Manage the information Cortana can access from this device”. The next time you take a picture of a flier for an upcoming event, Cortana will reach out asking if you want to create a reminder for that time.

Cortana Lasso: Are you a pen user? If so, Cortana can now help keep track of future events on your screen! Use the new lasso tool to circle the relevant information and Cortana will recognize the time, and offer suggested follow-ups through a context menu. Keeping track of upcoming events has never been easier! To try it out, go to Settings > Device > Pen & Windows Ink > Press and hold, and select Cortana Lasso in the dropdown picker. Find a website with upcoming event info, or an event poster someone shared in social media – once you have the event on your screen, just press and hold the pen back button, circle the time information, and watch Cortana do her magic. That easy!

Hardware keyboard Improvements

Entering emoji on your hardware keyboard just got easier: We’ve heard your feedback, and today we’re happy to announce the new Emoji Panel! Press Win + period (.) or Win + semicolon (;) while focus is in a text box and the Emoji Panel will pop up for you to quickly scroll through and pick the emoji you want.

The new Emoji Panel!

In the “People” emoji category, you can change the skin tone of the emoji by clicking the button on the top-right:

In the "People" emoji category, you can change the skin tone of the emoji.

To get the update, you need to opt-in to Microsoft’s Windows Insider Program, because Insider builds (especially the Fast Ring ones) can be buggy, I wouldn’t recommend you to run in on a PC that you use for work.

5 of the Microsoft’s Biggest Flops of All Time

In recent months, Microsoft has enjoyed great success by building impressive hardware such as The Surface Tablets and it has also won a lot of praise with Windows 10, however, the Redmond giant has not always been as good in building products as it is today and over past few years, the company has failed miserably in making and marketing products. Let’s take a look at Microsoft’s biggest flops in recent years.

Zune

Microsoft Zune

When the Zune was  launched in 2006, it was supposed to give a head-on competition to the iPod. However, it could not match up to Apple’s music player and thus became one of the most disappointing products that Microsoft made. It did not live up to any expectation in terms of sales and popularity.

Windows Me

Windows ME desktop
Windows ME desktop

Often referred as Windows Mistake Edition, Windows ME was released as Microsoft’s major OS upgrade after the popular Windows 98 but did not live up to the expectation. Which is why it wan not supported for more than a year. ME failed because of being too buggy and unstable.

Microsoft Kin

Microsoft Kin
Microsoft Kin

It was launched as social networking phone and Microsoft had invested two years and nearly $1 billion in terms of engieering time and money.
Microsoft promised to provide a revolution for younger cell phone users with the launch of this Microsoft Kin, but it failed miserably. It couldn’t last more than 2 months. It went through bad criticism and poor sales. Users were not even able to upload a photo on Twitter with the phone and lack of a proper app store only made the problems worse.

Windows Vista

Windows Vista Desktop
Windows Vista Desktop

It was launched after Window XP. It got mix response from the users, but alongside, it got negative reviews in terms of security, privacy, performance and product activation. Vista was too resource hungry for computers at that time and most new featurees could only run on new PCs.

MSN Messenger

This messenger was launched after huge investment done by Microsoft as it was targeted internationally. But, it has also come as a failure. It could not be as popular as pre-release AOL’s AIM. However, it could prove itself as a great IM client for beginners.

Windows 10 PC build 16199 is Out For Insiders, Here are All The Changes

After last week’s update, Microsoft announced just a few hours ago that a new build for Windows 10 PC and Windows 10 Mobile is rolling out for the Fast Ring of Windows Insiders. While the new build does not add that many significant changes over the last one, some new features are definitely interesting. The company uploaded a complete changelog for Mobile and PC Windows versions here, Following are some of the important ones:

What’s New in Build 16199 For PC

Emotive Experience in My People: The next wave of cool features for My People is now available for Windows Insiders! In addition to being able to place your favorite people to the taskbar, today’s build brings even more personal ways to stay in touch and share with the people closest to you. We’re adding:

  • See emoji from your pinned contacts: When you receive emoji from your pinned contacts you can now watch them appear and animate right from the taskbar! Have one of your pinned contacts send you an emoji via Skype (for example “(hero)”) and see what happens! If you’d like to turn this off, open taskbar settings by right-clicking on the taskbar.
  • Notification Badging: The contacts pinned to your taskbar will now display a counter if there are unseen messages, ensuring you have at-a-glance access to communications you have missed from your pinned contacts. Note: You might need to update Skype to version 11.16.556.0 to see notification badges when new Skype messages come in.
  • People-first Sharing: You now have two easy ways to share with your people in Windows 10! Drag-and-drop files directly onto the contacts in your taskbar to start an email, or share directly to your contacts via the share picker by choosing from a list recommended people to email.
  • Improved Game Settings: We’ve made some improvements and adjustments that PC gamers will enjoy via Settings > Gaming and the Windows Game bar (WIN + G).

Incoming call notifications

For our Insiders with Android phones, Cortana can now display cross-device incoming call notifications! Install the Cortana app on your phone, go to “Settings” > “Sync notifications” and turn on all the Cortana cross-device features. The next time you receive a call, a notification will appear on your Fast ring PC telling you who it is and giving you the option to text back a reply or decline the call.

Changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

  • Windows Defender Application Guard (WDAG) will now work as expected on touch-enabled PCs.
  • [DEVELOPERS] The XAML designer in Visual Studio 2017 hits an error causing a squiggle error under ThemeResource references to XAML’s generic.xaml resources. Please update to the latest version of Visual Studio 2017 Preview (Version 15.3 – 26510.00) or later. If Visual Studio 2017 Preview is already installed, users can update by starting the Visual Studio Installer, and clicking the Update button. You can confirm you have the right build of Visual Studio Preview by going to Help > About to confirm you are on Version 15.3 (26510.0-Preview) or later.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in many Win32 apps not launching if certain 3rd party antivirus programs were active prior to upgrading.
  • We’ve updated Windows Defender Security Center so as to no longer flag disabled drivers as issues. We have also adjusted the health scan logic so that using maximum brightness when connected to AC power will not flag a warning. Appreciate all who shared feedback on the subject.
  • As a result of low usage, we’ve made the decision to remove the Note quick action.
  • We’re updated our migration logic so that going forward from this build the state of rotation lock will be preserved across upgrades.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in color profiles being ignored after launching certain fullscreen games.
  • ADDED: To help you quickly find the option you’re looking for, we’ve updated the context menus for apps and tiles in Start to now include icons for more actions, including Share, Uninstall, and Rate.

Windows 10 PC build 16188 is now available for Insiders

Now that creators update for Windows 10 will soon be available for all Windows users, Microsoft has just pushed a new build for Windows Insiders. Numbered 16188, the build this time is more than just a bug fix and it adds many new features on to the OS. Here is the changelog of the build.

New features in Microsoft Edge’s PDF Reader: In addition to addressing a lot of Insider feedback on PDF functionality in Microsoft Edge, this build is also packed with a bunch of new features for reading PDFs in Microsoft Edge that we want you to check out. Here is the description of the features to look out for:

  • PDF Form filling: Every now and then we encounter forms to be filled which are in PDF format. Now you can fill in PDF-based forms within Microsoft Edge, save them and print them!
  • PDF Annotations: The annotations capability in the browser is now extended to PDFs as well. You can use the “Make a Web Note” button on the top right of browser frame to invoke an annotations bar.
  • Table of Contents for easier navigation: For reading longer documents, you can now use the Table of Contents (ToC) feature for easier navigation. You will see the ToC button on the left of the PDF toolbar if the document has ToC defined by the author. Click on any heading in the side pane to navigate to that part of the document.
  • Better viewing and navigation: Sometimes PDF documents, such as documents that are copies of documents scanned in, are not in proper orientation and need to be rotated to view them properly. Now you can rotate the PDF documents for better readability. Look for the rotate button in the toolbar. Also, it is important to be able to adjust the reading layout of the files to best suit user’s needs based on the screen size, type etc. Using the “Layout” flyout menu on the toolbar, now you can switch from one page to two page layouts and change to page-wise scrolling for better navigation experience for longer documents.

Windows Defender Application Guard:

Announced last September in the Microsoft Edge Blog, Windows Defender Application Guard for Microsoft Edge is now available in Windows Insider Previews for Enterprise users in the Fast Ring. Microsoft Edge running in Application Guard provides enterprises the maximum level of protection from malware and zero day attacks against Windows. We’ve made it easy to test drive Microsoft Edge with Application Guard. First, turn on Windows Defender Application Guard using the “Turn Windows features on or off” dialog. Select the checkbox for Windows Defender Application Guard.

Cortana’s settings have been integrated into Settings

Cortana is a core component of Windows and users look to the Settings app to find Cortana’s settings. We’ve heard your feedback about discoverability, and with this build, we’ve made the change to migrate all of Cortana’s settings into Settings. You can access them by clicking the settings gear in Cortana, going to Settings > Cortana, or just searching for the setting you’re interested in.

New Magnifier Settings page

In order to improve the experience both for low vision users, as well as casual Magnifier users who use it for presentations or quick zooming, we’ve updated the Magnifier Settings page. Insiders will notice that the page has not only been redesigned but also comes with a few new features, namely:

  • You can now easily follow Narrator around the screen with Magnifier by selecting “Follow the Narrator cursor”.
  • We’ve embedded a list of all the available Magnifier shortcuts into the Settings page for quick reference.
  • You can now zoom using your mouse wheel by holding down a key combination (Win + Ctrl)
  • We’ve added an option to open the Magnifier settings from anywhere in the OS by pressing Ctrl + Win + M.
  • You can now set your preferred Magnifier mode in Settings.
  • We’ve added an option to select your preferred zoom increment when using Magnifier.
