4 Better Evernote Alternatives (and why you may want one)

Should you stick to Evernote? If not than why and what should you choose? Let’s discuss some of the best Evernote alternatives you can switch to.

No doubt, Evernote is a great note taking platform. It has been refining its user experience and it has been adding new and useful features since its launch. Still, the time has changed and some really great Evernote alternatives have arrived in the market. As note taking is becoming more and more important part of a productive person’s life, the app can really make or break things.

So, should you stick to Evernote? If not than why and what are the best apps to switch to?

Why it makes sense to switch to an Evernote alternative?

Evernote is good at taking notes and if it was the only app to do that, people would still love it as much they do today. Still, being good doesn’t help if there are reliable and better products are available and it Evernote being expensive makes its vote weaker.

Evernote is expensive

Sure, there is a free tire of the product. But if you are into serious note taking, you would want to upgrade to paid tier that costs between $4 to $10 per month. The free version is too restrictive and you can only use it on 2 devices. Also you won’t be able to save a notebook locally if you are not paying for app.

App has a distaracting UI

A note taking app has to be simple and straight forward. Evernote’s desktop apps might feel bloated and navigating around them can be tedious for newcomers. At moments when you want to focus on your writing, Evernote’s apps may become distracting.

It is not available for Linux

Evernote has no client for Linux and it may be a deal breaker for many users. Sure, you can use the web version but having a Dedicated app could be much better than using a Web app.

Best Evernote Alternatives

Microsoft OneNote

OneNote is probably the best alternative to Evernote as it offers almost all features and costs, well, nothing. The notes are organized in notebooks and sections; you can share the Notebooks -not individual pages – with other users. OneNote has a good web clipper, pen support and it can also search for text within images. You can also use tags to find similar things at once and there are also options to embedding YouTube videos directly into notes.

In past, Microsoft bundled OneNote with its Office Suite, but you can get it for free now. The free version included all features and there are no restrictions on the number of devices or size of notes per month.

Onenote is powerful and free, which makes it an ideal Evernote alternative

By default, OneNote stores notebooks on OneDrive, but, if you need, you can save them locally. However, Local notebooks don’t have sync support. OneNote is available for Windows, OS X, Android, iOS and Web.

Should you use OneNote?

If you are looking for an Evernote alternative but don’t want to compromise with features or quality, OneNote is your best bet.

Google Keep

Google Keep is a free note taking service that is available for Android, iOS and Web. Keep is pretty straightforward. You can add notes, list, images, audio as notes and you are supposed to use it on a web browser if you are using a desktop or laptop. Keep is really good at being simple. Google Keep lacks many advance feature that Evernote or OneNote have, but it covers the basics and you won’t have to deal with endless options.

There is no dedicated App for Desktops, but Web app works well.

One of the biggest turn-off about Keep is its lack of a dedicated app, if you are using Chrome or Chromebook it should not bother you too much, but if you want to use a dedicated app on your Laptop or desktop, you are better off looking at any other Evernote alternative.

Who is it for?

Replace Evernote with Google Keep if you take notes mostly on your mobile devices and you want a simple note taking app with essential features.

Simplenote

Simplenote is made by Auttomatic -the company that is behind WordPress. It is a really straight forward Text note solution and it supports markdown. Simplenote is extremely minimal, you can add lists, bulleted points on notes and that’s all. There is no support for adding images or writing with pen. That’s not all, you can tag notes, publish them directly on the web, you can pin notes into the top of the list and see and restore previous versions of your notes. The apps are lightweight (Windows version is almost 50MB and Android version is under 10 MB as well)

Availability: Simplenote is the only good Simplenote alternative that has its own Linux app. Other platforms support includes Apps for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.

Who is Simplenote for?

Simplenote is not for you if you add images regularly, However, for people who write, Simplenote is a great app. I have been using it since its release for Windows and it really helps in keeping focus at writing and its apps are really snappy. So, go with Simplenote if you want markdown and you don’t need to add images into your notes.

Apple notes is not the most powerful note taking app on the planet, but if you use apple products it may be a great Evernote alternative for you. Feature wise, Apple Notes covers all basics. Apple notes is completely free and all your notes are saved in iCloud for syncing.

Obviously, it is only available for macOS and iOS, and it is preinstalled so you al.

Should you go with Apple notes?

If you use iDevices and Macs exclusively and you don’t need any advance features, Apple Notes can be a great note taking app for you.

OneNote Vs Simplenote : Which one should you choose?

Lets compare two of the greatest Note taking apps made in this century.

Its 2016, and still mankind has not been able to build a perfect note taking app. Almost all of them have some kind of flaw. Some are too bloated, some are too basic and some (Looking at you, EverNote) are too expensive for what they have to offer. In the Note-taking app crowd, OneNote and Simplenote are two best and unique apps. In this post, we will take a look at in Onenote vs Simplenote , which one is better for you and why.

Onenote vs Simplenote

Simplenote and OneNote both are some of the best apps ever made. Microsoft and Auttomatic both have been in this market for some time. Whereas Microsoft has built OneNote and sold it with other Microsoft Office apps for years Auttomatic has simply bought the app and made it completely free for everyone.
When thinking about Onenote vs Simplenote , the differences are not just these. As the philosophy and overall feel for both note-taking apps is completely different.

Creating Notes

The best notebook is one that you have everytime, SimpleNote and Onenote both are more than enough to cover your note taking need in an instant.

Onenote has a full wordprocessor style UI where you can create and format notes as you wish, to take a note, simply click on any empty place and start hitting your keyboard. In Simplenote, you also have same convenince as Onenote – except for one thing, you cant format any note more than Markdown. There are no options for you to change text colors or to instet any thing other than text. OneNote has great support for stylus, whereas Simplenote does not have it at all.

In Onenote, you can write, draw, insert images and audio recordings. In Simplenote, you are striittly limited to plain text that can be used with markdown. If you paste a image from a web page, Simplenote will convert it to a link to image that can be opened in a web browser.

Managing notes

When deciding between Onenote vs Simplenote , OneNote is great for most people because it does so much and it has most features that a simple user may need.
Instead of listing a endless amount of notes on a sidebar, OneNote lets you create separate Notebooks and sections. You can create a notebook for Work and one for your home or hobby.
Simplenote is a bit restrictive on notes management as it doesn’t let you divide notes in folders or sections. Instead, you can add tags to your notes and later find and sort notes based on tags.
For this single reason, Onenote should be the winner for most users in Onenote vs Simplenote debate.

Simplenote has some great plus points too

Granted that Onenote has extra features, Simplenote is still favorite for many known writers and publishers. The reason lies in convenience and attention to polish.
Simplenote has some features that Onenote simply cant offer. For example, you can directly publish a note on the internet and send a link to your friend to read it. Unlike other services, It just works, two clicks and boom- you don’t even have to launch a web browser.
Not just that, Simplenote has good Fantastic markdown support.
for an example, to make a sentence to H1 simple Place a # in front of it.
Also, a UI as minimalist as Simplenote will definalety help you in focusing on your work rather than searching within tons of toolbars.

Performance and cross platform availability

Both of the apps are available for almost all common platforms. Onenote looks and works best on Windows. Whereas Simplenote ‘s OS X app feels more polished than other platforms. Android apps are a different story though, OneNote is good enough for simple takes but feels too complicated sometimes. Simplenote on android feels snappy but it looses its markdown feature.
Debate on performance between Simplenote and Onenote goes in favor of Simplenote. The apps are ridiculously small for both platforms. The Android version sizes 4 MB to download not only it makes it faster in installation but also overall the app is far more faster in operation.

So, Which one should you pick?

So after looking on different aspects of these note taking solutions, which one is really better? Simplenote or Onenote?

OneNote is good for almost everybody

Granted that the app is a bit bloated, Onenote is still the best Note taking solution for normal users. Not only it is feature rich but also Onenote offers better flexibility than even some paid alternatives.
In case you are a student, or you need to work with photos, Onenote is the only winner for you in Simplenote vs Onenote comparison.

Simplenote is for some specific users

Simplenote, while being too limited compared to OneNote, is still a worth consideration for many cases. Writers, Bloggers and creative people find its minimalism useful.
Programmers and developers can benefit from its excellent markdown support. If you need to focus while jotting down notes and you don’t have needs for image support or a stylus, you should be going with Simplenote.

There is no doubt that Onenote is by far one of the most powerful note taking applications available today, but what if you are looking for something that does the same without having the  problems of Microsoft Onenote?  Don’t worry,  in this post we will cover the best Onenote alternatives for Windows.

Why you may be looking  for Onenote alternatives?

Microsoft Onenote is a good note taking  gem for many people. It has a great feature set and it is completely free to use,  Still it has its own set of problems.

While the desktop versions is feature packed, it is resource hungry as hell. If you have not yet upgraded to a SSD, The app takes some time to load.  For some users,  the UI if Onenote is too complex and confusing to use at first.

While Onenote has acceptable performance at syncing, the mobile apps are too big for entry level iPhones and Android devices. Also if you are a fan of markdown,  you are out of luck. If any of the above is a concern for you, you should also consider switching for a better Microsoft Onenote alternatives.

Simplenote

Simplenote is a better Microsoft Onenote alternative if you are looking for a minimal note talking app that supports Markdown. Simplenote was recently bought by auttomatic, the company behind WordPress.  The app is available for free and it is completely cross platform.  You  can use it even on Linux and the Web versions is also good enough to use.

Simplenote
Simplenote has a really simple UI

The biggest draw back is probably lack of image support. Simplenote is tiny in resource usage compared to Onenote,  sizing around 6 MB for the Android version.

Good for: Programmes,  people who are looking for simplicity and want it for free.

Google Keep

Google Keep is a simple Google service to store notes and to do lists. The app is available for Android and iOS,  but there is no desktop applications available right now.  Keep may be a better Microsoft Onenote alternative for you if you are a regular Google app user and you want note talking to be as simple as possible.  Also Keep has tight integration to Google’s other services such as reminders and mail.

Keep has full supports for stoing images which may make it a bit better than SimpleNote.

Good For: People who want simplicity but still some more features than Simplenote.

EverNote

You saw that coming didn’t you? EverNote has been a long time rival to Microsoft Onenote. And there is a good reason for this too. EverNote has a fantastic web clipper and the app is a bit easier to use and undersatnd.  The openiion may be defferiend for everyone, but, I find the android app better than Microsoft’s offering.

Evernote has both Paid and Free version,if you are using the free tier, you are limited to less data upload per month and online only access, but once you have paid for it, you get some of the best Note taking experiences currently available.

So who should Evernote is for? Keeping its price in mind, if you don’t like Microsoft’s product line, EverNote may be the best Microsoft Evernote alternative for you.

Apple Notes

Not everyone is runninng an installaton of OS X so it can be easily undrstoond that Apple Notes is often ignored. Still, it is a really good and simple note taking sollution if you are using any Apple device.

Apple Note is available by default on almost all apple devices, in case you don’t have access to your iPhones or MacBook, you can still access your notes on the web-version. You get free access to Apple Note if you own any Apple Devices. Keep in mind that you may have to pay for any additional iCloud storage if you run out of space.

Who Should consider Apple Notes as a Microsoft Onenote Alternative ? You should only think of switching to Apple Notes if you own any Apple Device.

OneNote UWP App

Surprised to see OneNote as a OneNote alternative? Well, Microsoft makes two different versions of OneNote for Windows. The first one (about which, we talked in first part of today’s post) initially came with Microsoft Office and it is named OneNote 2016. It is free and for most people the biggest downside may be its resource hungry nature, In case you are among those people, you can try the Modern App names OneNote which is available in Windows Store and is installed on all Windows 10 devices by default.

The Modern Version is lightweight and quick to start , but you will loose some more advanced features such as docking and screenshots capability.
