Photo sharing website Instagram is now bigger than twitter. Facebook owned company recently announced that it now has whooping 400 Million active users making twitter’s 80 million users look too small.

Growing Instagram

It took 3 years for instagram to achieve so high number of users on the internet. Unlike MySpace or Facebook, Instagram had to face tough competition from Twitter and Snapchat, both being good as photo sharing platforms. Instagram has proven that Facebook’s decision of buying the App focused Photo Sharing Network was not a mistake. Facebook paid 1 Billion Bucks to acquire Instagram in 2012. It also became one of the fastest growing social network since that year.

The Company  has already stated that more than 75% users are using it outside of USA. Since the rise of Instagram, Facebook has made itself the biggest social networking company in the world. Apart from Instagram which now has 400 Million users, Facebook also owns Whatsapp with 900 million users and the messenger with 700 million users.

It will be interesting to see how the twitter fights back in this war.

Windows Media Center is Dead: Here Are Your Alternatives

To help you in playing DVDs and Watching TV in your HTPC we have found some Windows Media Center alternatives that you can use in your PC

Microsoft has confirmed that just like it did with Windows 8, Windows Media Center will not be shipping with any version of its latest operating system. However it is not too new as Windows Media Center already stopped to be shipped as standard Windows Program in Last version of Windows i.e. Windows 8.

However with Windows 8, users had the option to download Windows Media Center for free for a few days from Microsoft and later it could be purchased from Microsoft by paying almost $10. Microsoft has cleared that Windows 10 won’t be shipping with Windows Media Center and also it will not be available to download.

Although this is disappointing for some users, still it makes sense for Microsoft. Microsoft’s Windows Media Center is used most for playing DVDs and Blu-Ray Disks and Microsoft had to pay some licensing fee to play these media disks. Now lots of desktops and laptops are shipping with No DVD Drive and thus it was a waste of money for Microsoft. If you haven’t used Windows Media Center in years, this will have no effect for you. But if you have been using Windows Media Center for your HTPC, be ready to start using some alternatives and even other OS for your Home Theater PC.
To help you in playing DVDs and Watching TV in your HTPC we have found some Windows Media Center alternatives that you can use in your PC, all the programs we are listing here are free to use and some require access to internet to work.

Windows Media Center Alternatives

KODI

Kodi UI with Custom Skin

Formally known as XBMC, Kodi is a perfect Windows Media Center alternative. It is open source, we have already discussed about Kodi in our Pick of Must have Free software list. The UI is slick, easy to use and you can customize almost every aspect of it. Kodi is capable of playing almost all popular media formats.

Download Kodi

MediaPortal 2

MediaPortal 2

Media Portal is also a good alternative for Windows Media Center, it requires .NET framework 4.5 so folks using Windows 7 may have to download an additional update if they haven’t installed Service Pack 1 yet. After installing it you will found that UI is really simple to use and is no brainer. I still found it to be too much simple and it looks a bit old, still if you don’t like Kodi, you can give it a try.
Download MediaPortal 2

VLC Media Player

Okay, it is a bit of cheating, VLC is not exactly a Windows Media Center like program, it is a simple media player, however if you are looking just for an app that can play DVDs VLC can work for you. Plus it has good skinning support and an active user community.

CyberLink PowerDVD

New CyberLink PowerDVD is an excellent Windows Media Center alternative if you are ready to pay for it. PowerDVD is, as the name says excellent for Playing Media Disks and other media files saved on local or network storage. PowerDVD supports a 10 foot UI that will work well if you are looking for something to install on your HTPC.

Using Firefox? Update it ASAP

Mozilla has urged all users of Firefox to update to latest version  in an blog post on 6th August. A serious exploit has been reported by user that searches for [su_pullquote align=”right”]If you are using Firefox to browse the web, you probably should update it as soon as possible.[/su_pullquote]sensitive files and then uploads them to a server located in Ukraine. according to Mozilla the problem was with browser’s built-in PDF viewer, so any user running Mozilla Versions without the built-in PDF support ( Firefox for Android ) won’t have any security thereat.

Further More Mozilla has also said that Only Windows and Linux version were under risk and Mac OS X versions were not the targets at this particular time.

The vulnerability does not enable the execution of arbitrary code but the exploit was able to inject a JavaScript payload into the local file context. This allowed it to search for and upload potentially sensitive local files.

Users with Ad-Blockers may be safe

As the exploit was served through an advertisement in an Russian news website, users who had an ad-blocker are safe -hoping that the ad was blocked.

People who use ad-blocking software may have been protected from this exploit depending on the software and specific filters being used.

In the blog post Mozilla’s Daniel Veditz cleared that the exploit did not leave any trace in Local computer.

Mozilla has already made a patch available, that can be installed right now. Mozilla is also urging all the firefox users to upgrade their browser to the latest version 39.0.3.

Mozilla’s CEO is furious over Microsoft

Looks like Mozilla’s CEO is not happy with Microsoft’s latest OS release. Chris Beard -the CEO of Mozilla has written an open letter to Microsoft on Mozilla’s official blog showing his anger.

Mozilla’s Open Letter to Microsoft

Looks like Mozilla’s CEO is not happy with Microsoft’s latest OS release. Chris Beard -the CEO of Mozilla has written an open letter to Microsoft on Mozilla’s official blog showing his anger. The letter is addressed straight to Microsoft’s CEO Sayta Nadela. Chris is concerned with the matter of Microsoft not letting Firefox installer itself as the default web browser. In previous versions of Windows, Installers and third party applications were able to change default applications, This was mostly used with Web Browsers and Media Players. In Windows 10 Microsoft has made it impossible for Installer (in this case Firefox Installer) to change the default application.

User’s who use Express Installation during Windows 10 installation, will find (as expected) Microsoft’s Apps and services to be set as default. This includes Edge as default Web browser, Bing as default search engine and Xbox Music as Default Music App. Changing defaults apps from Microsoft apps to Non Microsoft apps is still possible but it has to be done by users themselves, not by the installer.

To change the default application, user has to dig in settings and then only from there user can make changes to default applications. It obviously is beneficial for the Microsoft Edge web browser. Although user can make the changes, Mozilla’s CEO thinks it is harder to do for new and non experienced computer user.

It now takes more than twice the number of mouse clicks, scrolling through content and some technical sophistication for people to reassert the choices they had previously made in earlier versions of Windows. It’s confusing, hard to navigate and easy to get lost.

Chris has furthermore asked Microsoft to make it easy for people to change this settings. Mozilla also has made a step by step tutorial and a video to change default web browser.
