Dropbox is killing some of its most expensive apps next year. Dropbox’s email client named Mailbox, which it acquired last year by paying a whopping $100Million and the other one is its photo management app called carousel.
As the Dropbox CEO Drew Houston said in his blog post, they are doing it to focus on other products such as Dropbox paper.
…we’re sorry. It’s not easy to say goodbye to products we all love. But ultimately, we think this increased focus will help us create even better experiences for you in the months and years to come.
Mailbox was one of the most talked Dropbox app, it worked with Gmail and its iOS and Android apps were good enough to make email more streamlined and simple. The other app (called Carousel) was photo creation and management app available for both major mobile platforms and it will be killed off by March 31st, 2016.
However, If you use any of the two apps, you don’t need to worry about the data saved in each app. The Mailbox app works with Gmail, you can find all created and received stuff on your Gmail account.
Similar to Mailbox, photos from Carousel app can be found in any user’s Dropbox account where they were always visible.
Killing One for Another
Dropbox has already said that they are doing this because they want to focus on other services. Paper is the latest collaboration tool from the company which is competing with Google Docs and Microsoft Office 365.
Definitely, Paper is a more important project and as it is in a public beta, it needs some attentions.
…we’ve learned the vast majority of our users prefer the convenience and simplicity of interacting with their photos directly inside of Dropbox. With this in mind, we’ve had to make a difficult decision.
It seems that company will make some of Carousel’s feature available in Dropbox’s file management.
It will be interesting to see how it affects the Dropbox and its products.
