Google, Yahoo, and Others Will Soon Ban Torrent Links in Search Results

Torrent sites have been around for a long time and have found a way to survive no matter what. If one is taken down another comes up to take its place. Google has been the biggest marketer of these sites, by informing people about them. Now with the increasing complaints against such torrent sites by the entertainment industry regarding online piracy, Google along with many other search engines, is now planning to ban all torrent sites.

To do away with the label of being a piracy promotor, Google entered into a discussing with other search companies and entertainment studios that were chaired by UK’s Intellectual Property Office, according to a report by Torrent Freak.
The meeting included other prominent search engines such as Yahoo and Bing, among many others. A decision was reached that they will deal with the appearance of the torrent sites in their search results. A draft amendment to the Digital Economy Bill committee will allow the government to impose a code of practice on search engines. But now, after a recent meeting, the various companies decided that such a step will not be needed.”Since the idea was last discussed in [parliament], Intellectual Property Office officials have chaired a further round-table meeting between search engines and representatives of the creative industries,” Baroness Buscombe said. “While there are still elements of detail to be settled, the group is now agreed on the key content of the code, and I expect an agreement to be reached very soon.”

The Torrent Freak reported that the agreement would come into affect on 1 June 2017. As of now, no details have been announced. And the companied involved have no comments about the steps they plan to take to curb piracy.

The agreement is most likely to be implemented in UK, and after that, it will be interesting to see if it will work all over the world with uniformity.

WhatsApp May Soon Let You Reply To Statuses, With Option to Mute Them Too

WhatsApp’s status message option is set for a major revamp soon as hints are being dropped from the apps beta version across various platforms. Now the beta version for the Windows phone shows significant changes and improvements in the functionality of the status section.

A new leak has surfaced that shows that the user might be able to mute and unmute status notifications for specified contacts and also be able to view the list of muted users. The new status message feature of the Facebook-owned company Whatsapp will let you reply to a person’s status message, a feature that seems to be borrowed from Snapchat.

WhatsApp Status Alerts and Mute Option

WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp beta watcher, shared screenshots of WhatsApp beta for Windows Phone 2.17.40+ that had buttons to mute and unmute status alerts. A new Status section is expected to arrive, and once you have muted a contact, their status notifications won’t come up. You also won’t get push notification for these users, when they change their statuses.

This feature will also come with an unmute option that will let you change your decision whenever you want. You can just go to the mute list and unmute the contact you wish to.

Status Message Replies

The informer also states that we will be able to respond to status messages as well and have a conversation about it, just like on Snapchat Stories. This new feature is seen in WhatsApp beta for Windows Phone 2.17.44+ version. The mute features were seen on WhatsApp beta for Android 2.17.46 version as well.

The new Whatsapp Status feature has been seen on various Android and iOS beta versions as well. The new features are essentially to notify the users when their contacts change their statues. However, there are many improvements expected to come in the Status Message feature of Whatsapp, such as push notifications or the ability to change status within 24 hours. The WhatsApp Android version is expected to get a separate tab for statuses, joining the existing chats, calls, and contacts tab.

More Than Half of World’s Internet Traffic is Not Coming From Humans

Thinking about the internet, users imagine people sitting on their computer across the globe to communicate with each other, sharing their ideas, thoughts, anger and sorrow with each other, but humans are not all that internet serves to connect.

A new report found that more than half of all Internet traffic now comes from bots -software apps designed to do everything on the web for users and organizations. These bots include search indexers, social media bots, and even some detrimental ones.

These bots are divided into two categories: The Good Bots and The bad bots.

The first ones are designed to monitor internet services and websites which in turn results in better web browsing experience for users across the internet.

The latter ones are used to steal content, infringe copyright, increase the load on web servers to take down websites and of course, to hack private data and websites.

The good news is that since last year, traffic from good bots has increased considerable while traffic from bad bots has remained the same.

And now that bots have outnumbered humans, we should be careful on the internet.

Chrome For Android Will Soon Let You Pin Websites To The App Drawer

Google be releasing a Chrome Update for Beta users in upcoming weeks that will let you pin certain websites directly to your app drawer, just like any app appear when you install them from Play Store.

Chrome has supported creating shortcuts to websites on Home Screen since 2015, but because they appear only on home screen and not on App drawer, they have been confusing for many users. Especially for folks who have a habit of launching stuff from App drawer and keeping the home screen clean.

Bear in mind that not all websites can be pinned to the app drawer, it will only work for sites that Google qualifies as Progressive Web Apps. These sites will also be able to send you notifications similar to standard apps when pinned.

Apart from pinning sites, Chrome’s 56th version update will also make downloading stuff to phone easier. While these additions to Chrome are not groundbreaking, they sure make Chrome for Android better to use.

These Are The First Two Cities To Get 5G Mobile Connectivity

When it comes to having a good enough mobile network, we have come a long way, and it looks like the future is brighter too.

AT&T announced today that the company would be starting its world’s first commercial 5G rollout in two cities within 2017: Austin and Indianapolis.

The telecom company is calling the rollout as “5G Evolution, ” and it claims that the top speed of network will be up to 400 Mbps, which is almost 40 times faster compared to today’s LTE connections. As per the researchers, the theoretical limit of 5G networks is more than 1 Gbps, and this is why the company has added the word Evolution in the product name.

The company will continue to work on improving the speed to reach true Gigabit internet by the end of the year, so if you are living in Austin or Indianapolis, you probably shouldn’t  get your wired internet disconnected.

The 5G rollout is a part of AT&T’s much larger plan, named Network 3.0, the plan is to use software and hardware upgrades to bring down the cost down and increase the internet speed significantly for its users.

For The Love Of God, Don’t Use These 10 VPN Apps On Android

VPNs are one of the most trusted ways of browsing the internet anonymously. These small apps let you access region locked content on the web, and most of them encrypt all your browsing traffic so that no one on your network can see what you are doing on the internet.

VPNs are especially easy to install on Android Devices and Google’s Chrome browser, and they don’t require the user to have the technical knowledge, but you might want to be a bit more careful from the next time you install any VPN apps on Android.

A group of researchers from CSIRO’s Data 61, UNSW Sydney, UC Berkeley and Malaysia’s UCSI conducted a research on VPN apps for Android. And they found that among a ton of VPN apps that are available on Google Play, many are insecure who inject ads on your pages, contain malware and even leak your personal data.

The researchers looked at 283 VPN apps on the Play Store, and they found that over 38 percent of these VPN apps contain some malware.

In addition to that, almost 18 percent of apps don’t even encrypt your browsing data and 16 percent VPN apps rerouted traffic through other users’ devices.

Here are 10 of the worst offenders, you can study about the research in detail in this PDF.

Many VPN companies spend a ton of money for Advertising, promotion and affiliate programs and this is why it is tough for average users to find an honest advice.

Before buying or installing any VPN apps, you should do some research so that you can be sure about the safety of your data.

Android’s Instant Tethering Will Let You Get Online Without Even Unlocking The Phone

In case you haven’t noticed earlier, All Android Phones have a tethering feature that lets you use your mobile internet on your tablet or laptop using a wi-fi hotspot, Bluetooth or data cable. While it is quite useful (I am using it right now, to publish this on Getting Geek), if you need to do it frequently, it can be a little tedious to set it up as you need to tap the screen more than just a few times.

It looks like Google is fixing this in an upcoming update to the OS. As Android Police spotted, the search giant is adding a new feature called ‘Instant Tethering’ that will let you connect via tethering automatically.

Instant Tethering will link up to devices using the same Google Account to make going online should you loose internet connection on your device. Once configured, if a device loses internet connectivity, it will notify you and then ask you if you want to connect using your phone. Once you agree, the connection signal is sent via Bluetooth.

Credit: Android Police

Instant Tethering will work with devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and the first devices to get this feature will be Nexus and Pixel Tablets and phones, which makes sense.  The feature is installed on devices using Google Play Services, but just updating it won’t work as there are some server side components too.

Instant Tethering will work with other phones too, but I think it will make more sense with tablet devices running Android as not all tablets support LTE or other mobile networks via SIM cards.

Opera Neon is The Most Interesting Web Browser You Will Download Today

For years, the design of a web browser has been same for almost all PCs. You will have a tab strip at the top of the window that is text next to favicons, an address bar below it. A hamburger menu with some additional icons next to address bar and if you need, there will be a bookmarks bar right below the address bar that is followed by space for web pages.

It has been the same for quite some time, and no matter what mainstream browser you look at nearly all of them work on the same basic principal.

Well, not Opera Neon.

Opera Neon is the browser underdog’s new project that re-imagines how a browser could work and how it can make web browsing modern. After downloading and installing the browser, you will realize that the browser takes all the UI principals of making a web browser and throws them out of the window.

Instead of a long series of tabs at the top of the Window, you will find beautiful blobs that look very similar to Chatheads in Facebook’s Messenger App. Rather than Having a themed or Gray background for the Window, Neon uses your desktop wallpaper that gives the browser an open feeling.

One of the most useful features of the browser is the ability to use the websites in the split screen mode. If you have more than one browser tab open and you want to work on 2 of them, just click on a button, and you will have two websites side by side -no need to open and split them like you have to do with Google Chrome.

Opera has not only innovated on large ideas, but also the company has added some other small other things that can prove to be very convenient in the future. For example, there is a simple drawer that lets you control volume output from all open tabs. Also, there is a built-in screen capture tool that works perfectly in my short test and was able to manage snaps easily.

You can download and try the browser right now; there are still things that can be added -there is no extension support yet- but Neon is defiantly worth looking into if you like trying new ideas.

Spotify Has a Job for Barack Obama (No, Really)

obama spotify

“I’m still waiting on my job at Spotify… Cuz I know y’all loved my playlist,” Said Obama at White House reception last week. Well, I don’t think he will need to wait anymore.

There is a new job listing on Spotify’s website, and after reading the requirements, it seems like Obama will be a perfect fit for the job. Spotify CEO Daniel Elk even tweeted to Obama about a new role that he may be qualified for: Precedent of Playlists.

Website and after reading the requirements, it seems like Obama will be a perfect fit for the job. Spotify CEO Daniel Elk even tweeted to Obama about a new role that he may be qualified for: Precedent of Playlists.

The site states the following qualifications for the job:

Who you are:

  • Have at least eight years experience running a highly-regarded nation.
  • Familiar with the Spotify platform, with experience in programming playlists at a federal level. Anything from an eclectic summer playlist, to a celebratory, “I just found my birth certificate” playlist.
  • Have good relationships with a wide range of artists and musicians. Ever had Kendrick Lamar play at your birthday bash? We’d love to hear about it!
  • Can speak passionately about playlists at press events. Let us be clear, you should be nothing short of one of the greatest speakers of all time.
  • A keen attention to detail and consistency. Able to work closely with other departments, so playlists can hold up to public scrutiny.
  • Someone with good team spirit, excellent work ethic, a friendly and warm attitude, and a Nobel Peace Prize.

The list of requirements is pretty specific, and I can’t, for the love of god, think of anyone other than Obama for the job.

Do you complete the requirements? If yes you might as well want to try your luck before a precedent takes your place.
