AdBlock vs AdBlock Plus : Which One Should You Use?

Adblocking on the internet has been a topic of heated debate in recent years. On one hand, Ads help content websites get monetized and help the owners pay their bills (Getting Geek Included) and on the other hand, ads are increasingly becoming more and more intrusive. AdBlock and AdBlock Plus are two of the most popular adblocking extensions on the market. Let’s see which one you should use in our Adblock vs Adblock Plus comparison.

What’s in the name?

Despite very similar names, both are developed by different teams. Adblock Plus was an ad-blocking extension made for Firefox. Then Adblock was made by different people for Chrome and after seeing Ablock’s popularity, Adblock Plus team made a version of its adblocking extension for Google’s browser.

With time, both browsers have made their way through other web browsers including Safari, Opera, and Microsoft’s Edge.

AdBlock vs Adblock Plus: Similarities

Before we talk about the differences, we should discuss some of the common features that both extensions will come with.

Firstly. Both, Adblock and Adblock Plus use a common list of ads to block, meaning both extensions will block the ads the same, The list is called EasyList and it is maintained by Adblock Plus. The takeaway is that no matter what extension you choose, you will see the same end result.

Second, both extensions are open source, meaning anyone can see and edit the source code and then turn it into a new extension without paying any money.

Third, Adblock and Adblock Plus both allow some ads to be visible to the user, this is called Acceptable Ads. This list is maintained by Adblock Plus, which allegedly takes money from different Ad Companies to not block their ads. At first, Adblock did block all ads, but at the time of writing, Adblock also uses these “Acceptable Ads”. Keep in mind that these ads can be completely blocked in the settings if you want, for users, it just adds a new step after installing the Adblocker

Differences Between AdBlock and AdBlock Plus

Now that we have discussed all important similarities, let’s discuss some differences between both ad blocking extensions.

UI and Usability

First off, compared to AdBlock Plus, settings and configurations on AdBlock are fairly complicated. These are easy enough to understand and change for tech-savvy users. But, for users who are not as experienced, some settings, specially Filter lists and Customize options may be confusing. On the other side, AdBlock Plus is easier to manage and configure.

UI of Adblock is a bit complicated to understand compared to Adblock Plus

AdBlock does have a very powerful Element blocking option on its right-click menu that lets you hide any element of a webpage permanently. AdBlock Plus can not block elements easily.

Filtering and Whitelisting

AdBlock Plus makes it super easy to add and remove whitelisted websites. In case you didn’t know, these are sites that are allowed to show ads. The extension has a simple address bar where you can drop the address of a page to whitelist it. On the AdBlock extension, while you can whitelist websites, the process is not as seamless.

Adblock Plus makes it very easy to whitelist domains.
Adblock Plus makes it very easy to whitelist domains.

While it may differ in your case, I have always felt that AdBlock Plus is lighter in terms of resource usage compared to AdBlock. If you are on a less powerful computer, AdBlock Plus should be faster in terms of performance.

Adblock vs. Adblock Plus: Pros and Cons

Adblock Plus

Pros of Adblock Plus
  • Adblock Plus is open source
  • Easy to understand and configure
  • Has very easy options for whitelisting webpages.
  • Blocks most malware and popups.
  • Is lighter on resources.
AdBlock Plus is relatively easy to customize for non tech savvy users
AdBlock Plus is relatively easy to customize for non-tech-savvy users
Cons of Adblock Plus
  • Hides advanced options by default.
  • It shows some advertising through controversial “Acceptable Ads” program by default.
  • Element blocking is not very useful or intuitive.

Pros of Adblock
  • Blocks the same ads as Adblock Plus
  • Is lighter on resources and hence may perform better on old computers.
  • Has a far better element blocking options compared to Adblock Plus.
  • Has more advanced customization options.
  • Is also open source.
adblock plus vs adblock
Adblock has some extra customization options
Cons of Adblock
  • Just like Adblock Plus, it will also show “Acceptable Ads” by default.
  • Has a bit confusing UI and settings compared to Adblock Plus.
  • Whitelisting is not as fast and seamless.
  • There have been some privacy concerns about it in past.

Adblock vs Adblock Plus: Which one should you choose?

Adblocking has always been controversial subject in online monetization, and there are some great arguments on both sides. If you want an adblocker, between the two, you should go with Adblock Plus if you don’t need advanced features and element blocking. If you feel comfortable with using a bit advance tools and programs or you use a less powerful computer, Adblock should be a good fit for you.

In case you want another alternative, which is light on resources and has almost all the features of these extensions, I think uBLock Origin is worth a look. I have been using it regularly and I have no complaint regarding its features and performance.

How To Use YouTube TV Mode On Windows 10

YouTube TV mode Windows 10Google has made YouTube apps for both major mobile platforms, but the search giant has been too lazy to create an official YouTube app for Windows 10. You may find some on Windows Store but compare to how Official apps are for Android or iOS; they seem like garbage. This is especially annoying when you are using a PC on your home theater system, and you want to navigate around youtube using a remote or keyboard rather than a mouse.

The text is too small from a distance and navigation can be annoying as you will have to use the mouse to navigate and search the site.

YouTube TV Mode

Luckily, YouTube now has a TV mode that works under any desktop browser, and it has a TV-optimized UI so that you can use it from a distance. I f you have an HTPC plugged into your entertainment system, it is defiantly a better way to watch YouTube from the couch.

Accessing YouTube TV Mode

Getting the TV mode of the site is not complicated at all, simply add /tv at the end of URL, and you will be switched to the TV mode. As you will notice, the TV mode will not have any full-screen button in the video player, to toggle between full screen and windowed mode, you can press F11 on your keyboard.

Keep in mind that you won’t be able to see your YouTube library or subscription without logging into it using your Google Account.

To log into your Google Account, follow these steps:

  • Go to
  • Press right arrow key on your keyboard to open menu and select Sign In
  • On the popup, you can find a code, write it down somewhere as we will need it later.
setting uo youtube tv on Windows
Write down the key as you will need it soon
  • Open a new tab on your web browser and go to
  • Once you are there if asked log-in to your Google Account using your Gmail ID and Password.
  • Select YouTube accounts from the screen and then enter the code to log-in to YouTube TV mode.

  • In the next screen click on Allow and then you will be good to go.

Once you have logged-in you can browse your YouTube library by going to Menu>Library

Using YouTube TV mode

The TV mode works a lot like Windows Media Center; you can use a remote connected to your PC to navigate. In case you don’t have a remote, a keyboard will work too.

To navigate around the UI and select/change videos using Arrow keys on the keyboard. To choose any option, press Enter and to get back to the previous screen, press ESC key on your keyboard.

If you need to search, you can do so on almost any screen by pressing

While it is not as good as using YouTube on Android TV or Apple TV, the YouTube TV mode is still better than browsing full version of the site from 6 feet distance.

Have you tried the mode? How do you use it on your setup? Share with us in the comments below.

How to Disable Automatic Brightness Changing in Windows 10

I received a mail from Getting Geek reader Akriti recently in which she asked about how she can turn off automatically brightness adjustment on her laptop.

Hey, Saurabh!

I have an HP laptop that has a Core i3 Processor, 4 GB RAM, and 15.6” Display. Since I have upgraded the computer to Windows 10, the brightness keeps changing automatically even though I don’t remember making any changes to the settings.

I observed that when the colors in the screen are dark, the brightness turn itself low and when there are bright colors on the screen, the brightness is increased. It is distracting for me and even after spending hours in the settings, I could not find out how to disable it.

Is there any way to disable it?

(if you have a question related to tech, you can ask them here)

The automatically brightness changing is because of a built-in feature called Adaptive Brightness. It is intended to improve battery life, but it can be annoying to many people. Luckily, you can turn it off in just a couple of minute. Let’s discuss how you can turn off automatic brightness adjust in Windows 10.

  • Click on Cortana icon in the taskbar and search for Power Options.

change display brightness Windows 10

  • Once the search is complete, press Enter to open Power Options in the control panel.
  • From the next Window, see which power plan is active (it will have an active radio button) next to it you can find “Change Plan Settings” Click on it.

  • From the next screen, select Change Advanced Power Settings.
  • A new dialog will appear, in this dialog scroll down to Display and click on little plus (+) sign to reveal other sub-items.
Changing Adaptive Brightness in Windows 10

  • Under Enable Adaptive Brightness, select Off for “On Battery” and “Plugged In” both.
  • Hit OK to save the settings

If you follow the above, the problem must be solved, if the brightness is still changing automatically, you should take a look at your graphics card settings and other display related programs that came pre-installed on your computer.

How To View AMP Version of Websites On Google Chrome Desktop

AMP is a fast and open standerd built for mobile web. Here is how you can use AMP on Google Chrome Desktop as it will make web browsing much faster.

AMP was designed for mobile websites, but if you are on a slow internet connection, using AMP pages to browse the internet on your desktop can speed up browsing a lot, and it can help you in minimizing the data consumption. In this post, we will discuss how you can get AMP on Google Chrome Desktop version.

But why is it useful?

AMP pages are optimized for low size and smallest possible load time. Moreover, following are some other benefits of viewing AMP pages on desktop:

  • AMP pages remove most of the useless clutter from webpages.
  • These have less number of advertisements and usually lower number of trackers compared to standard, old-school web version.

Using AMP pages on Desktop version of Google Chrome

To browse AMP pages on Google Chrome, you can install AMP Accelerated Mobile Pages Reader from Chrome Web Store. Once installed, by default, you won’t see any changes made on web pages. To enable AMP browsing, click on its icon in Chrome’s Toolbar and under default, select AMP version if available.

Once done, the extension will redirect you to the AMP version of a website if there exists one.

If for some reason, you need an alternative, Desktop AMP is worth a look; it is not as full featured as above, but it can get the job done.

Also, you can use an extension called Detect AMP to detect if a webpage is available in AMP or not. If a web page is available in AMP, the extension will show a bolt icon, to view the page in AMP, you can click on it.

Fun little trick

You can add a ‘/amp‘ at the end of a web page to go to the AMP version of the page manually. If there is an AMP version, Chrome will take you to it. But if the site is not available in AMP, you will see an Error 404. In such case, you can go back to the original page.

6 Simplenote Tips and Tricks You Should Know

We recently reviewed Simplenote; it is a great minimal note taking application that is perfect for people who just wants a straight forward tool to jot down text wherever they are and whatever they are doing. While The UI of Web Apps, Mobile Apps (or ever Desktop apps) is a toolbar-less and minimal, there are many features in Simplenote that first-time users might miss. So, to help you in getting most out of the service, here are some of the best Simplenote tips and tricks that you should know.

Use Markdown to format text

If you have been using the app and never tried Markdown, you are missing probably the best feature of the app. In all the apps, you won’t find to make text bold, add hyperlinks or do any other formatting. Instead of having buttons to do that, Simplenote relies on Markdown – a markup language to stylize text.

You can enable Markdown in any Simplenote note by clicking on Info button and then clicking on the toggle next to Markdown.

Enable Markdown in Simplenote

You can learn more about it here, but following are the basics to get you started:

# Name of heading one

## This is heading 2

### this one is heading three

*here is italics text*

**This text is in bold**

***Here are both at the same time***

[This is for a link](

Writing the above will look like the following in Simplenote:

Export all your notes

If you like to keep a local backup of all your online activities, Simplenote has got you covered. Strangely, the desktop apps don’t have an export feature, but you can export all of your notes in a .zip format using the official web app.

To export all your notes from Simplenote:

  • Go to
  • If asked, Enter your email and password to sign-in
  • On the top left corner of the window, click on your email ID.
  • Click on Download Zip

Sync Simplenote with other note taking apps

Unlike Microsoft Onenote or Google Keep, Simplenote can be accessed using third party apps; there are not many out there, but if you need something specific, the available ones are worth checking out.

Probably the most popular is nvALT 2, it is a simple Mac app to take notes quickly using keyboard shortcuts. Once installed, you can sync your notes created on nvALT with Simplenote by heading over to Sync in settings and entering your Simplenote credentials.

Some other apps are ResophNotes (for Windows) and nvPY (for Linux)

Publish your notes to the web directly

Probably one of the unique features of Simplenote is its ability to let you publish notes directly to the internet. If you need to share a note with a lot of people where you are not sure if they use Simplenote, you can use this feature.

To publish a Simplenote note to the web:

  • Click on Share button in the app
  • Select the Publish
  • Toggle the Make public link to On.

Once you are done, you can copy the URL of note and then share it with others via email or social media.

Set a Passcode on Simplenote

Many people use note taking apps to save valuable data that might be personal, if you have saved some sensitive information in the app, you might want to prevent others from accessing it. To do this, both mobile apps (iOS and Android) support setting passcodes on the app to prevent anyone who does not have the passcode.

To set a passcode on Simplenote app, do the following:

  • Open the Simplenote and go to Settings.
  • Under Pin Lock, tap on Turn PIN Lock On
  • Create a PIN and re-enter it to verify.

Once you have done that, the app will automatically lock itself on the phone.

Currently, there is no option in desktop apps to set a passcode or password, however, it may be added in future.

Learn Keyboard Shortcuts

You can only be as fast as you type on a keyboard, if you know how to perform certain commands on your keyboard, there will be less need to take your hands out of it and to reach the mouse.

Here are keyboard shortcuts for Windows version of Simplenote:

Ctrl-n Create New Note
Ctrl-f Move focus to the search box
Ctrl-+ Increase font size
Ctrl- – Decrease font size
Ctrl-0 Reset font size

And following are the keyboard shortcuts of Mac version of Simplenote app:

Command-n New Note
Command-p Print Note
Control-tab Move focus to tags
Command-l Move focus to search box
Command-+ Increase the font size
Command- – Decrease the font size
Command-0 Reset font size back to default

How to (Easily) Extract Flash/SWF Files?

Flash is still one of the most used ways to let users play videos or games within web browsers. Here is how you can extract flash files easily.

Flash might be a hated technology; it is still one of the most used ways to let users play videos or games within web browsers. A Getting Geek reader asked me how he can extract flash files on his computer.

Hey, Saurabh!

I was playing a flash game online, and I really liked the music running in the background. I wanted to listen to the music clip only, but I couldn’t because some other in-game sound effects were also being played in the background.

Is there a way I can extract the music from an SWF File?

Now, before we start talking about how you can extract flash files, you should keep in mind that the SWF files/games you are trying to extract may be copyrighted.

Extracting SWF Files

Flash files have a .SWF file extension, and while it is a dying tech, it is still a widely used format to distribute browser games and – in many cases – videos online.

SWF files contain all visual elements and sound files. Images are usually in. JPG or .PNG format (you can read the difference between them here) and sound files are usually in .WAV, .MP3 or .OGG format.

You can use some tools to extract SWF/Flash files on your computer locally, but, to do that, you will need to download the SWF file locally.

How you can download flash files locally

If you are on Google Chrome, simply go to the Chrome Extension Store and download and install Flash Video Downloader. Once you have done it, open the page which contains the Flash game or flash file that you want to download.

Once you are on the page, from the toolbar, click on the Flash Video Downloader icon.

Here, you will be able to see all the flash elements from the page (these have .swf at their end) to download a flash file; simple hit the big-blue download button.

Extracting the flash files

You can find many applications that can extract flash files, however, most of them are not free. Here are two of the most popular and I am sure that they will get the job done.

Fortop SWF Resources Extractor

The Fortop SWF Extractor is free to download application; you can install the app from the website and use it to extract any (or even all) files contained within SWF files. To do that, just open the application and drag the downloaded flash files to the software window, then you can extract any file by selecting it and then clicking the extract button on the toolbar.

fortron Swf extractor main window

The application includes a small preview of the flash file on the sidebar, and you can select and preview files before extracting them.

GlobFx SWF Extractor

The GlobFx SWF Extractor looks slightly dated and feature-less then Fortop’s offering, but once you have bought the full version, it does its job well. Unlike Fortop SWF Extractor, with this one, you can see an enlarged preview of photos without first extracting them.

In the above two, I would recommend you to install the first one if you do not plan the buy the full version as it the latter adds a bit too annoying watermarks on extracted images.

Do you know any other way of extracting SWF files? Share with us in the comments below.

How to Live Stream Apple’s October 27 Event

You can live stream the October 27 Event on Apple’s site, but please keep in mind that not all web browsers work. Chrome won’t work, but Edge will.

If you don’t live under stones, you must already know that Apple is hosting an event on October 27 where it will  announce updates to its MacBook Pro lineup.

While almost all major companies have started to live stream their major events online, surprisingly enough, most of them don’t make the live stream available on YouTube. Instead, they host live stream on their own website. (which also makes sense as you can pre-order from the same websites in many cases)

You can live stream the October 27 Event on Apple’s site, keep in mind that not all web browsers work. The supported browsers and devices are:

  • Microsoft Edge on Windows 10
  • Safari 6.0.5 or newer on OS X 10.8.5 or higher
  • If you are on iOS, Safari on iOS 7.0 or higher
  • Apple TV with software 6.2 or later if you are on 2nd and 3rd generation.
  • 4th gen Apple TV

There is a good chance that Apple will update MacBook Air and iMac. Now that Microsoft has just unveiled Surface Studio, an All-in-one PC,  expectations from Apple about new iMac will be higher.

Don’t forget Like our Facebook page to get updates about Apple’s event.

5 Tips To Make WhatsApp More Private and Secure

You might want to know about how you can make sure that your conversations are safe. Here are 6 WhatsApp privacy tips to make texting more secure.

While SMS was once the most used way to send text messages, it won’t be wrong to say that WhatsApp has taken that crown now. The App easy enough that your grandmother can use it and the price tag of $0 makes it much more appealing that sending SMSes. If you use the  messaging app, you might want to know about how you can make sure that your conversations are safe. Here are 5 WhatsApp privacy tips to make texting more secure.

Lock WhatsApp using a Pattern or Password

Probably the best way of stopping someone from opening WhatsApp is to lock it with a PIN, Password or Pattern lock. WhatsApp does not have any built-in app locking available, but getting it on Android is quite easy.

Some Android Phones have built in option to lock apps in App Drawer (the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 is a good example) However, if your phone does not have one, you can use AppLock to protect your WhatsApp chats.

Hide WhatsApp from App Drawer

If you don’t want anyone to know that you WhatsApp, a good way to do it is by hiding the icon completely from the App drawer of your Android Phone.

Again, some phones have built in options to hide apps from App Drawers, if your phone does not have one, you can install a custom launcher from Google Play Store. Apex Launcher, Evie Launcher, Smart Launcher 3 and ASAP Launcher are some of the best custom launchers that come with App hiding features.

Hide Last Seen Timestamp from others

By default, other contacts on WhatsApp can see the last time you were online in the app. If you don’t want anyone to know, you can turn off the Last seen timestamp.

Keep in mind that if you disable your Last seen status on WhatsApp, you will not be able to anyone’s Last seen too.

To Hide your Last Seen on WhatsApp on Android or iOS do the following:

  • Open WhatsApp and click on the three dots on the top right corner to open the menu.
  • Tap on Settings > Account and then select Privacy.
  • Under Last seen choose Nobody.
hide last seen on whatsapp

Stop sending read receipts

With some recent updates, you can now see a double blue check mark in  WhatsApp texts and Images, these indicate that your contact has seen the sent message. As convenient it may be for some people, if you don’t what others to know that you have read their message and you have still not replied, you can turn off these Read receipts too.

The catch? similarly to Last seen, you won’t be able to see others read receipts too.

To turn off read receipts in WhatsApp go to Settings > Account > Privacy and check off the Read Receipts under Messaging section.

Stop Read receipts on WhatsApp
Stop Read receipts on WhatsApp

Keep in mind that you can’t turn off Read receipts for Group Chats

Stop WhatsApp photos from appearing in Gallery

Now that you have protected WhatsApp with a password or pattern,  you will also like to stop anyone from seeing  your WhatsApp images in Gallery. If you are on iOS, you can do it with just a few taps. However, if you are on Android, it is a bit complicated than iOS
On iOS, Go to phone’s Settings > Privacy > Photos and then deselect WhatsApp from the list of apps whose images are saved into the Gallery.
On your Android phone,  You will need a file manager, if you don’t have one on your phone, ES File Manager is good enough and it is free.
Open the file manager and then navigate to Internal storage. Now go to WhatsApp > Media> WhatsApp Images and WhatsApp Videos folder. Then create a file within each folder called ‘.nomedia’. This will stop Android’s Gallery from scanning these folders.

Lost your Phone? Deactivate WhatsApp

At one time, WhatsApp can only use one mobile number. You can use it to stop anyone from accessing your WhatsApp if you have lost your phone. If you have lost your phone, you can

Just get a duplicate SIM with the same number ( in India, you may need to submit a copy of FIR to your mobile career to get a replacement SIM)  and activate WhatsApp from the new SIM card. WhatsApp on your lost phone will stop working immediately.

Even though Google Chrome is probably the most feature rich browser, sometimes, it can be tricky to find out something that should otherwise be straight-forward. One of them is importing and exporting passwords in Google Chrome.

Getting Geek reader Susan wrote asked :

Hi Getting Geek team,

I hope that you are having a great day. I use Google Chrome and I have saved all my bookmarks and passwords in it. recently, I needed to print out all my passwords to put them into a safe. But, even after spending quite some time in settings, I could not find out how to do it.

So, how can I export passwords in Google Chrome ?

Thanks, Susan

Exporting Passwords in Google Chrome

Google Chrome offers you to save passwords and if you have signed-in to your Google Account, you can later access them from any other device. By default, you can see individual saved passwords in Google Chrome by going to the following address in your browser:

However, as you can see, there is no option to import or export passwords, you can view the password by clicking on the tiny Show button next to the bullets and that it. But don’t worry, there is a Google Chrome flag that will allow us to activate import and export buttons on the dialog box. To do this, go to the following URL in your browser:

You will see a quite long list of experimental features that you can enable from here, simply press CTRL+F on your keyboard and type the following to jump quickly to the desired setting.

Utilities to Export Passwords saved in Google Chrome

In case you don’t want to use built-in options, you can still export and view passwords using a NirSoft utility called ChromePass. To export all passwords using this tool, simply do the following:

  • Download ChromePass and extract the zip file.
  • Open the app and if asked, enter your Windows Password to see all passwords saved in Google Chrome.

ChromePass is free and it works on Windows
  • Press CTRL+A on your keyboard to select all entries at once.
  • Click on File> Save Selected Items and then enter a name for your file.

ChromePass is fast and easy, but, it is only available for Windows. So, if you are using Linux or macOS, the previous method should be the way to go.

It’s Not Just FPS Games: 5 Cool Ways VR is Going to Be Used

Virtual Reality (VR) is here and it is going to stay. With comfortable and affordable VR headsets turning into a reality, VR Gaming can soon become the most popular way to play your favorite games.

Virtual Reality (VR) is here and it is going to stay. With comfortable and affordable VR headsets turning into a reality, VR Gaming can soon become the most popular way to play your favorite games.

In fact, according to the experts, the industry will be worth $4 billion by 2018 and, while gaming will drive the bulk of headset sales, the applications for VR are almost endless.

In fact, as we’re already starting to see, there are many other industries that can harness the power of VR to create more engaging, entertaining and educational worlds.

So, with this in mind, here are 5 cool ways Virtual Reality will be used:

Virtual Reality Casinos

One medium that’s currently exploring the possibilities of virtual reality is the online casino industry. Building on the current movement towards authentic gaming options, virtual reality looks set to plunge players into a new world of possibilities in the coming years.

Evidence for this movement towards a more realistic way of gaming can be found inside 32Red’s suite of games. Known technically as live dealer casino games, options such as roulette give players the ability to interact with real dealers in a virtual setting.

Combining RFID chips and HD webcams allows the company to offer three forms of “live” roulette, including French, European and Immersive. Each one gives players the ability to watch, bet and become a part of a live game directly from their desktop or mobile.

The rise in popularity of these games is part of the reason VR looks set to become a major part of the iGaming industry. Indeed, games such as Casino Euro’s English Roulette (its own spin on European Roulette) and Double Bonus Spin Roulette at Grosvenor Casino could be enhanced with VR and prototype products such as Microgaming VR Roulette.

In Education Industry

While distance learning is nothing new, online classes are becoming more popular and that should create some interesting opportunities for the VR industry. VR can probably provide the best possible experience of remote learning.

Educational games such as Minecraft are already a hit with children, but if they were able to step into a world of hidden obstacles it would make things even more entertaining. Moreover, a heightened sense of realism would increase a child’s focus (as the sense of trepidation would feel more real) and, therefore, cause them to retain more information.

In fact, when you survey the current offerings from companies such as Oculus and Steam, the groundwork is already being prepared. Much like the mobile industry, both companies have prepared apps stores and VR marketplaces so that virtual education tools can be offered, found and distributed with ease.

For Communication

VR headsets like Rift and Vive have the potential of giving you the ability to feel like you are into another world. This is the most important concept in VR gaming, but it can also be used in situations when distant communication and remote interactions are required.

In fact, building on this idea, we can see that virtual tourism will soon become a real thing. Thanks to Google Street View, we’ve already seen how this sort of technology can help improve our remote interactions.

Indeed, it can be very useful for you if you are not able to go or can’t afford to travel to another place but want to know more about it. Essentially, VR will soon be the go-to medium when we need help reaching places that are too costly or impractical to visit under normal circumstances.

VR Shopping

Retail is another industry that will thrive thanks to VR. One of the biggest problems for online shoppers is the inability to see an item up close before they buy it.

Virtual Reality Shops can be a great new addition to the already growing e-commerce industry. With Virtual Tours and a real time shopping experience, Shopping on sites such as Amazon could become infinitely more immersive and efficient in the coming years.

Indeed, VR companies like Trillenium are already working on software that will enhance consumer’s shopping experience and one of biggest online retailers, ASOS, has shown interest in the app.

Trainings and Simulations

It may be one of the most obvious non-gaming use of VR for most people. Computer simulations have been around for a while, but, VR can add a real quality to the simulation experience.

Medical simulations or space simulations are one of the biggest benefactors of VR. For the Medical and Space exploration industry, price of Oculus Rift or HTC Vive is really attractive and with an already available work force, VR can be a big help for them in providing a real and proper simulation.

It gets even more important for Military and Defense sector. US Military has used Unity 3D engine and games like Battlespace 2 to prepare their soldiers for combat. VR will add a realism and multi-user systems can be a big help for military in preparing troops for team-work.
