onedrive data plan changes

Recently, Microsoft informed everyone that the company is making some radical changes in its OneDrive pricing and storage.

Following were the major changes:

  • Free users will be reduced to 5GB of storage. Even if you enabled Camera Roll feature in OneDrive’s Android or iOS app, it will no longer benefit in storage.
  • Office 365 subscribers will be now reduced to 1TB of OneDrive Storage from Unlimited storage.
  • You will no longer be able to buy 100GB or 200GB monthly plans, instead, there is only one plan -50GB for $2 per month.

As expected, many users were not happy that their free storage is being reduced more than two-fold. As a result on uservoice, the idea of giving back the original storage got ore than 72K votes.

After being kicked so hard, Microsoft replied that it was sorry about poor communication between customers and company.

…In November we made a business decision to reduce storage limits for OneDrive. Since then, we’ve heard clearly from our Windows and OneDrive fans about the frustration and disappointment we have caused. We realize the announcement came across as blaming customers for using our product. For this, we are truly sorry and would like to apologize to the community….

…We are all genuinely sorry for the frustration this decision has caused and for the way it was communicated. Thank you for sticking with us.
