Here Are the 5 Best Free Video Players for Mac OS X (2018 Edition)

Sure, online video usually takes most of the content consumption time for us but there are still plenty of cases where having a great video player for your Mac is important. We did talk about some good Video Players for Windows a couple months ago, it would only be fair that we talk about some of the best free video players for Mac too. So, here is a compiled list of some of the best video players that are available for your MacBook and Mac Pro.

VLC is probably the best for you

VLC is one of the most popular media players for any platform at the moment. Sure, it’s not the best looking and sure, it may not have all the features related to videos on earth. Still, VLC has a very snappy user interface, almost all common features someone may expect, and it plays anything you throw at it.

Among all other features, wide format support is one of the strongest suits of this Open Source video player for Mac. Apart from that, gesture support for the touchpad is also excellent and you can customize almost all aspects of the software including skins and keyboard shortcuts.

Its shortcomings include a fairly average media library and its tendency to eat your battery. Still, if all you are looking for is an ad-free, simple yet powerful video player for Mac, VLC should be your pick.

Quick Time Player for best battery life

While not entirely the best video player for mac, sometimes, what is included just works. If you need a media player with best battery optimization possible, Quick Time player is the video player you should be going for.

QuickTime offers the best battery life and comes preinstalled.

Frankly, Quick Time sucks for a wide video format support especially, it can’s play MKV files. Still, if most of your media is Apple ecosystem generated, you should be good to do. It comes preinstalled on all MacBooks and Macs and is one of the few apps that support Apple Airplay.

In case you did not already know, MPV is the fork of the popular mplayer. Just like VLC, MPV is a free and open source video player that supports hardware decoding and OpenGL video options. MPV also has a very minimal UI only showing you controls when needed and it stays out of your way unless needed.

These features alongside with a wide file format support make MPV is great video player for Mac OS X. If you don’t like VLC for some reason, the free price and good feature set of MPV make it worth looking at.

Pick Kodi if you want a full flagged media center video player

Kodi was previously known as XBMC. The open source application is not only a video player with a wide format support, it also has a UI that makes it one of the best to use on a home theater PC.

Kodi is made with a 10 foot UI and if you have your PC in a living room, Kodi makes it really easy to watch video on your Mac from a couch. Alongside being an excellent video player, Kodi proves itself among the best free video players for mac by having impressive library creation and management features. It also supports a large number of online channels and if you have a TV tuner, you can enjoy watching TV on your mac too.

5K Player for High Res video Playback on Mac

5K Player is probably the best video player for your MacBook or Mac if you have a ton of High-resolution videos. While the format support is not as strong as VLC or MPV, 5K Player will still support most common video formats.

While 5K Player is impressive for high-res video playing. What struck me most was its support for watching and downloading video from sites such as YouTube and Dailymotion. 5K Player also supports online radios such as BBC, iHeartRadio and if you want, you can download tracks from sites such as SoundCloud too.

The UI of 5K player is just about average and while it has support for downloading online videos, there are defiantly better apps that come with more control and features for downloading online video.

Also, keep in mind that videos you download from sites like YouTube or Vivo may be copyrighted.

I prefer VLC about all because it just works. Among the 5 apps, I talked about, which one is your favorite? Is there any other app that I should have listed here? Share with others in the comments below.

Apple is Being Sued For Slowing Down iPhones With Older Batteries

Just a few days ago, a data study revealed that Apple is updating older phones to slow down if they have an old battery. After some backlash, Apple acknowledged that the updates to slow down old phones are being pushed to preserve battery life.

Now, after this admission from Apple. An individual Stefan Bogdanovich filed a fist action lawsuit against the company. He claimed in his lawsuit that Apple’stactic of slowing down performance has caused losses to iPhone 7 and 7 Plus users. He put that Apple never asked users for permission and the decision was as a ploy for Apple to market its products every year.

Another lawsuit was reported by Chicago Sun-Times where Five Apple customers in the state have filed federal lawsiit alledging inethical practices by Apple.

In case you missed, Apple’s statement on Thursday stated:

“Last year we released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE to smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions. We’ve now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future,”

Time will tell how these lawsuits turn out for Apple, it would be interesting to see nonetheless.

More Reports About iPhones Cracking Open Come Out

After our earlier report of 6 already disturbing cases of Apple’s iPhone-8 Plus batteries swelling and getting the phone split opened, we had been waiting and watching to confirm how true the news is. For now, though there is no official response from Apple, just that they are looking into the matter, there is a case spotted in the US.

A Best Buy employee on Reddit uploaded the images of bulging iPhone 8 on Thursday.

Now it seems a serious problem, one that will affect Apple’s reputation badly. Previous cases were reported from Taiwan, Japan, China, Canada, and Greece. The first incident was spotted in Taiwan when suddenly a lady informed that her iPhone 8 Plus split open while it was charging.

Apple has a huge reputation for its hardware which is arguably infallible in its consumers’ view. If all pieces are affected by this disaster, returning or replacing the pieces will be only a slight damage compared to what Apple will go through as a loss of its market reputation.

iPhone 8 and 8 Plus went on sale on September 22. Apple has not yet released any data of early sales of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, so we indeed do not have an exact report of how many phones are already out there in the market, how many are in stores and how many Apply keeps in his manufacturing units.

This is while pre-orders for Apple’s highest and most ambitious phone iPhone X will begin on October 27. This phone will be shipping by November 3 and is built on the same technology in terms of hardware. It has not encountered any complaint till the date but the issues in its sibling may affect its sale too.

Here is Everything We Know About The Upcoming iPhone 8

The new child of the royal family is on its way. This is the eighth one. Yes, we are talking about iPhone 8, that is to launch in September. Unlike others, Apple had frowned on leaks sufficiently to keep the market in curiosity. There is lesser stuff known about iPhone 8 than all other major announcements like of Red Hydrogen or The Essential Phone. On the other hand, Apple is more predictable than anyone else. Like the previous announcement dates, a similar story seems coming this year around 12 or 13 September. The launch date, however, may drift a little here and there.

Nonetheless, there still are things to ponder if you are willing to update your Apple device or switch from Android/Windows. Firstly, it’s three variants in iPhone 8 series, unlike two variants in previous occasions.

So there’ll be three iPhones: likes of the 8s and 8s Plus, titled as iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Edition as expected – and then another sibling with a greater price supposedly titled as iPhone 8 Pro. Every possible feature rumored till now is going to be a part of iPhone 8 pro including depth-sensing cameras, an entirely new display technology, a screen that wraps all the way around the front and much more to surprise.

A leaked photo of display assembly

Most of those features are revealed by Apple when it mistakenly published the software for its new phone publicly be it its design, its lack of a home-button, and its facial recognition features. The new iPhones will also have a taller aspect ratio for the screen and the phones will have significantly smaller bezels compared to older phones.

It will be more expensive too, costing as much as $1200 or more for the most expensive model. And the iPhone events are a couple of weeks into September, around the Labor Day weekend, kind of patronizing the working class.

The recent fight seemed to be intense as Apple has updated its store excluding Withings’ products which are a division of Nokia. But, after their settlement, Apple again has added Withings’ products in the store. Both Nokia and Apple have just not only settled the patent issue, but they also collaborated on technologies like digital health, optical network, and IP routing.

Considering Nokia is actively developing new Android Phones, and has made a comeback on the market, Now the interesting thing is to know what Nokia is up to after getting $2 billion it has in the bank. Real World Test Shows That OnePlus 5 is Faster Than iPhone 7 Plus

OnePlus 5 has already beaten many some of the most popular flagship Android Phones in speed tests and now tests show that the phone is faster than Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus, the most powerful phone made by the Cupertino company.

In a video speed test by YouTube channel PhoneBuff, David Brahimi set OnePlus 5 against iPhone 7 Plus in a speed test of two laps of launching certain apps and games. Previous tests had ruled iPhone the winner consistently since iPhone 6s. But this term, OnePlus 5 launched the apps faster than iOS.

Although there are some things to consider, as speed tests are not definitive the indicators of a phone’s performance. They just take the launching apps to judge. The speed of copying files, performing other tasks in the OS is not taken into consideration. OnePlus 5 also had some help as it has its shorter app launch animations. While iOS 10 has extensive animations slowing it down, OnePlus’ animations are shorter. However, considering the phone does come with an impressive 8GB of RAM and Snapdragon 835 SoC, OnePlus 5 is hard to face hiccups in performance.

The OnePlus 5 was announced globally last week. The phone was launched in India last Thursday at Rs. 32,999 for the base variant with 6GB RAM, and Rs. 37,999 for 8GB RAM. The phone has a 5.5-inch full-HD screen, Android 7.1.1 Nougat with OxygenOS skin, and comes with 64GB or 128GB storage. Camera on the back consists 16-megapixel and telephoto 20-megapixel sensors. The front camera has 16-megapixel resolution. It packs a 3300mAh battery with Dash Charge support for quick-charging.

GST Effect: Apple Just Cut The Prices of iPhones And MacBooks in Country

As soon as GST is taken into the application, Apple iPhone’s MRPs have fallen, along with iPad, Apple Watch, and MacBooks throughout the market, though with few exceptions. The price drop varied from 1200 Rs. to 6,600 Rs. respectively for 32GB iPhone SE and 256GB iPhone 7 Plus.

For iPad models drop is from Rs. 900 to Rs. 3,900, as newly announced iPad Pro models have gone cheaper too. That too is before anyone could buy them.

MacBook Air prices have not differed, but MacBook and MacBook Pro models have new fallen prices benefitting Rs. 5,100 and Rs. 11,800. Mac Pro too has got quite a reduction after the last big revamp. And the newly refreshed Mac models also have price cuts even before market availability, while top-end 27-inch iMac models and Mac Mini are at the receiving end of a slight price bump.

All of this had a sudden and customer benefitting changes brought by GST. Arguably the same had been opening as many markets such as private transport and goods retail. It is deemed very near that not just Apple, but the whole smartphone market is going to react to GST as soon as it graduates on its path.

These Are The 5 Most Expensive Products Apple Has Ever Sold

If there is one thing Apple is known for, other than its amazing products, it’s the fact that no matter what device Apple is selling it will be the costliest in the market. Recently, however, Apple is changing this image and launching products in the affordable price range. This might change things for Apple in a totally new direction of affordable gadgets. So it’s only fair to look back at some of the memorable products launched by Apple that was priced too high for the average buyer.

Apple LISA (1985) — Almost 650479 Indian Rupees ($9,995)

Aaron Sorkin’s 2015 biopic “Steve Jobs,” introduced many of us youngsters to the Apple LISA. Jobs who was played by Michael Fassbender spent most of the movie claiming that the computer wasn’t named after his daughter Lisa until he finally admitted that it was. What the movie failed to tell us was that the Apple Lisa was priced at $9,995. If we consider the inflation, then it would cost a whooping $24,000. The LISA was the first mouse-operated computer that had a graphical user interface system.

Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh (1997) — Almost 488038 Indian Rupees ($7,499)

The twentieth anniversary Macintosh was released in March 1997. It may also be considered the ancestors of the present day iMac. It contained all of the computer in a slim body positioned behind the screen.

It cost $7,500 back then, at present it would have cost $11,200. However, in just a year it’s price was slashed to $1,995 to clear the stock and the Tim was discontinued after that.

Macintosh Portable (1989) — Almost 475087 Indian Rupees ($7,300)

It was in September 1989 that Apples first portable computer was unveiled. It may not have been portable in the truest sense as even though it wasn’t tied to a power socket all the time it weighed 16 lbs. The privilege of owning a portable computer came at the price of $7,300 — about $14,300 today.

Apple LaserWriter (1985) — Almost 4,55,455 Indian Rupees ($6,995)

Apple LaserWriter had the ability to be shared over a dozen Macintosh computers. And this capability caused it to be priced at a stunning $6,995. It would have cost $16,000 in the present time.

It was one of the first laser printing devices in the market and brought in an era of desktop publishing.

Apple Watch Edition (2015) — Almost 11,05,943 Indian Rupees ($17,000)

Apple Watches were introduced in 2015 with the baseline model priced at a very reasonable $349. However, this price didn’t satisfy the watch collectors for whom a watch wasn’t just a time telling device but a statement in itself. And Apple was happy to oblige.

A new version of the Apple Watch was introduced called ‘Edition.’ The price started at $10,000 for a watch with rose gold casing and went as high as $17,000 for one that came with an 18-karat yellow or rose gold case and clasps. Apple, however, understood soon that no one was interested in buying a watch for the price of a car.

By then the Apple Watch Series 2 had rolled around last September, and the Apple Watch Edition was being sold as a fitness device rather than a style piece and sold highest variant for $1,300.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released a new investor note. This note was focused entirely on Samsung’s device with a few details regarding the iPhone 8. It is predicted that the demand for Samsung Galaxy S8 will go down owing to the release of iPhone 8.

Kuo said that Samsung Galaxy S8 will lack attractive features that will hamper its demand thus ultimately pushing the customers to the new and improved iPhone 8. It is predicted by the analyst that Samsung Galaxy S8 will see lesser sale than the Galaxy S7.

Kuo also offered details regarding the iPhone 8 including that it will feature OLED display, wireless charging, new glass design, and function area.
